I got the idea for this book while sitting inside a giant redwood tree in California. It’s the first of my collections of original nursery rhymes, and the first of two illustrated by my friend Garth Williams. It was published by Greenwillow Books in 1986.

After I finished THE RANDOM HOUSE BOOK OF POETRY FOR CHILDREN, I decided to compile an anthology for younger children. This collection contains over 200 poems by many poets, and is wonderfully illustrated by Marc Brown. Published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1986.
